When you type /notify nick in mirc for example when the person connects to the server mirc sends a message in the format "$nick is online" and also when the person leaves "$nick has left irc"

Oh I see, good idea.
So does mIRC save this info, and is it on a network basis, e.g only notify if user X joins the network you had selected at the time you added the /notify or any.
And what is the mIRC syntax for "unnotify" ?

mIRC saves this info in the config file. The syntax is pretty easy :
/notify nick
/unnotify /nick
it detects the nick no matter what server you are connected to.
I use zsirc on my windows mobile phone and it uses the exact same syntax
