Confused about Server Usernames and Passwords - Server List vs. Quick Connect

Added by Allison B about 3 years ago

Howdy, everyone.

I've gotten a new computer and am trying to set up AdiIRC fresh on it (not copying config). I never remember the /server syntax for connecting to my IRC bouncer, so I was trying to add it to the server list through the UI.

My first concern is I'm not sure what all of the places mean in the UI where you can specify "passwords". There are two places to specify usernames and three places to specify passwords. See the attachment for what I mean. What does username1 and password1 get used for? Nickserv? What are username2 and password2 used for? What is password3 used for? Quick connect only has one box for username and one box for password, and this is how I was able to connect in the end, but I'd like to save the server details in case I use a different server in the future with quick connect. What does username a in the quick connect box match up to on the server list? Username1 or Username2 or neither?

My second concern was something I noticed while double checking my settings, port, password, etc. I got some desktop notifications saying "You have connected to Server as Nick" then immediately "Nick has been disconnected from Server", but from the server info window, it never looked like it connected at all. However, looking at the Raw log, I noticed that there was a line saying "YOU ARE 100% CONNECTED", which would explain the desktop notifications... but it doesn't explain why it would keep reconnecting!

The reason for multiple password fields is because there are some servers which requires a password to connect to the server itself such as a bouncer/bnc/private/company servers, but also requires a account password for authenticating the nick once connected.

Password1 is server/bnc password.
Password2 is nick authentication password.
Password3 is server/bnc password per server, this means you can have multiple server in a network group where each server has their own individual password. Setting this password overrides Password1 but does not effect Password2

The password in quick connect is only for server/bnc password, same as Password1.

Based on the rawlog, you were successfully connected, then the server disconnected you for whatever reason, check the status window for any server error/disconnect messages.

Appreciate the quick response; seems to be working well now. I am a little surprised that it is Password1 for the server and Password2 for nicknames. Maybe there's a way to clarify that in the UI. Also... it seems to send the ident message to Cserv.quakenet.org if the username2 or password2 are filled in, even though that's not the server I'm connecting to. Is that configurable somewhere?

As for the connection, the status window only showed this, which was why I was confused by the raw log was saying I had actually connected.

In your screenshot, you set your Login Method to "Challenge Auth" which is a quakenet only authentication method, it is hardcoded to perform the auth against the bot.

Ahh, that makes more sense now that I know that the user/pass boxes right under it are for nick authentication. I thought it was related to the server auth before, so I was picking different ones to see if it made a difference, and that must have been the one selected when I got the password blocks sorted out. Thanks again!
