Feature suggestions

Using AdiIRC 2.8 x64 in win10.

Currently, when AdiIRC is already open,
when you click to open a server link (e.g. irc://chat.freenode.net ) from inside a browser, (e.g. Firefox)
then AdiIRC opens the link in the background, i.e. remains unfocused.

My suggestion is AdiIRC to become the active window (I haven't found any relevant entry in File|Options).

PS. I love AdiIRC, it's truly the most feature-rich IRC client ever!
Thanks for your great work!

Thank you.

One more suggestion, please.
It's a minor thing in Options|DCC:
to move the entry/dropbox "If file exists" next (or below - I'd prefer next - ) to the "Auto resume transfers", as these two entries make a pair.

The textbox is also part of the auto accept and it's right underneath, but I get your point.

The problem is I am using tables so controls automatically resize to fit translated text and different screen DPI, there is no easy way to combine a 1 column checkbox with a 2 column text/dropdown, but I will think about putting a alternative, maybe putting the auto accept stuff in it's own groupbox.

Something I've noticed (currently using latest beta build of 2017/08/31) :

after your fix, opening irc:// links (inside Firefox), focus the AdiIRC window, only if the AdiIRC window was minimized, otherwise they open in the background.
Could you please make it so that it focus even when it's maximized?

I have not able to reproduce this issue

That't strange, because it for me it occurs consistently, every single time.
In case my description of the issue was not accurate enough, here is some hopefully better STR:

- just launch AdiIRC beta (without connecting to any server). Have the AdiIRC window maximized or expanded (i.e. not minimized).
- launch a browser, (e.g. Firefox) and click this server link: (e.g. irc://chat.freenode.net) :
notice that AdiIRC opens the link in the background, i.e. remains unfocused (its button in taskbar just blinks).
- If you repeat the above while having AdiIRC minimized, then it focuses ok.

but I made some changes for next beta, let me know if that helps.

In any case, looking forward to the next beta.

I'd like to make a few more suggestions, please:

  • add 2 more columns in the 'DCC Transfers' panel: "Size" and "Remaining" (size).
I believe it's essential to be able to see the size of the file you've been downloading,
and that it would be useful to be able to see the remaining part also as data size.
  • add an option to 'Show current download speed in the title bar'.
I think it would be very useful to be able to see the download speed in the title bar (i.e. check whether a download has stopped for some reason)
without having to keep the 'DCC Transfers' panel open during the download procedure.
  • add an option to display a tip message whenever a transfer has stopped/failed.
  • to be able to rearrange(via drag'n'drop) the server entries in the Treebar.

I hope you find my suggestions useful!

RE: Feature suggestions - Added by Per Amundsen over 6 years ago

  • The DCC transfers panel does show size during transfer and on complected transfer in the "Message" column, but I will think about adding a dedicated field.
  • I am not sure constantly updating Titlebar is a good idea, Titlebar is also customizeable with variables, not sure what that would work together unless the dcc stuff was also a variable, maybe you could create a script that prints the data you want to the Statusbar (could also write to the Titlebar with /titlebar) using a combination of /statusbar, $statusbar, $get/$send and /timer.
  • You can enable DCC tips in Options -> Tips -> Other Tips -> Dcc Send/Get/Chat.
  • Due to the complexity of sorting/grouping and the number of options for Treebar, it is not possible to add drag/drop, but you can set up window priority in Options -> Windows -> Window Order.

Thank you for the detailed information!

One thing I've noticed (since you mentioned the "Message" column - which is located in the "Notices" panel ) :
well, while in all other panels, the timestamps are displayed correctly, in my local time (that is GMT+2 DST, i.e. GMT+3, currently here in Greece)
in that specific panel, they appear as GMT.
For example:
a message from a server window:

[22:38:34] -DirtBox.SceneP2P.net- *** Found your hostname

and here is the relevant entry in the 'Notices' panel:

[19:38:34] irc.scenep2p.net DirtBox.SceneP2P.net *** Found your hostname

Could you please take a look at this?

RE: Feature suggestions - Added by Per Amundsen over 6 years ago

Good catch, I noticed "Private Messages" panel has the same issue, fixed for next beta.

RE: Feature suggestions - Added by Kostas K over 6 years ago

fixed for next beta.

Thank you.

RE: Feature suggestions - Added by Kostas K over 6 years ago

I will think about adding a dedicated field.

Also, please consider adding a "Progress" column too.
The best I think would be this column to display a progress bar per download,
which on top of it to have the percentage value (=already downloaded percentage, with 1 decimal (like in uTorrent), or 2 decimals, e.g. 20.45% like in KVIrc ),
in other words, just like the "Status" column in uTorrent, the "Done" column in qBittorrent, etc.

IMHO I think this is the best way to perceive the progress of the current downloads.

One more suggestion:

Currently in the 'URL Catcher' panel, whenever you doubleclick a found URL, you only get the prompt to open the link.
But, from my experience, links posted in channels are usually posted not isolated:
they are either followed by the target page title (when posted by bots - in such case the links are often shortened - ), or as part of a sentence (when posted by a user).

My suggestion:
  • either add an entry in the context menu(whenever you rightclick on such entry) to "go to the chat line" in the relevant channel window.
  • or, most preferably, the prompt (to open the link) to appear only when you doubleclick the link itself - doubleclicking anywhere else (on the rest part of each row) would navigate to the relevant chat line.

Being able to quickly navigate to the relevant chat line, would help quickly find the context of the listed links.

RE: Feature suggestions - Added by Per Amundsen over 6 years ago

There is no correlation between a link and a message, best I can do is a search for the first message containing the link.

Something last, please:

I noticed, while having DCC tips enabled (Options | Tips | Other Tips | Dcc Get),
that whenever a DCC download finishes, the displayed message is like this:
"DCC get of x.rar from y channel complete (00:10:10 853.92KB/sec)"
i.e. the duration value is the Time Elapsed.

Well, is the displayed speed the average download speed, or is it the last recorded speed before it completion?
If it's the former, then, additionally to adding a 'Size' and a 'Progress' column, I'd like to ask you please to consider adding an "Average Speed" column.

I mean, if the average speed during the download is already calculated in the background (in order to be displayed at the end),
why not display it as a column too, to help the user decide to abort a download if it's slow altogether? (for reference, KVIrc displays this information, and I've found it very useful)

RE: Feature suggestions - Added by Per Amundsen over 6 years ago

The average speed is not calculated. so the speed in that message is the last "tick".

I think adding so many columns gives information overload and makes the width of the panel unnecessary large, need to think about this.

I just tried the new beta build 2017/10/16, and unfortunately, the issue remains:
the timestamps in the 'Notices' panel are still wrong. (I haven't got any pm so I can't check the 'Private Messages' panel).

Per, thanks for fixing the timestamp issue for my time zone too. Looking forward to the next beta.

Unfortunately, in the latest beta build 2017/10/16, the issue remains.
To reproduce:
just open AdiIRC, switch to Firefox, visit https://ixirc.com/?l=net (it has a lot of irc links) and click to open any irc:// link in Firefox (*):
well, as you click the various irc:// links, that (initial AdiIRC) window will only gain focus only if it was minimized, otherwise they'll open in the background.

(*) I have set in Firefox's Options|General|'Files and Applications' group|Applications ---> the 'irc' entry to 'Use AdiIRC' (it's "Use Pick an app" by default).

RE: Feature suggestions - Added by Kostas K over 6 years ago

One more suggestion, please:

Currently, whenever a dcc transfer is complete, the following message is displayed in the 'Notices panel':

[19:00:00] Network Nick ** Closing Connection: Connection Lost

IMHO, this gives the impression that an disconnection has occurred, and so the transfer is canceled - not completed.

Therefore, I'd suggest changing it to:

[19:00:00] Network Nick ** Closing Connection: Transfer Complete

RE: Feature suggestions - Added by Per Amundsen over 6 years ago

Have you verified the files was fully finished when this happened? This error message should only be shown if the transfer was not completed.

RE: Feature suggestions - Added by Kostas K over 6 years ago

Yes, the files are alright.

And, I just noticed that the error message isn't displayed in all downloads.
(It occurred in my all recent downloads - I download from xdcc bots - , that's why I thought it occurs in every case)

In fact, it occurs, but not consistently: it occurred 4 times (different files) for me a few minutes ago, the download files were ok,
but, when I've tried again the same files from the same bots, the downloaded files had no problem.

I took the liberty and just sent you via email these 4 links (small files) where the problem occurred for me in the last minutes, in case you'd like to check them out.

RE: Feature suggestions - Added by Kostas K over 6 years ago

It just happened again, now with a big file I've downloaded (42 GBs), from a different bot.
But the file is once again fine.
And there has been no internet disconnection.

Edit: it just happened once more, different file (60 GBs), different bot.
The file is ok, as always.
